NEW BUNKER RAKES
BUT IS THERE A RIGHT AND WRONG WAY TO RAKE?
The new bunker Rakes & Stands are starting to arrive and are being placed out on the course, with two in the larger bunkers. Lets hope this encourages more members & visitors to rake after they have played out of them,
BUT did you know there is a right and a wrong way to rake a bunker?
Sand Distribution
Ideally there should be twice as much sand in the flat area of the bunker as on the front / back slopes, this helps the ball to come to rest on the flat area

Raking
Some golfers enter the bunker, play their shot, then walk out backwards, pulling a rake after them to smooth out the footprints. The consequence of this is that it redistributes sand from the flat area to the sloping area you are walking out from.

Correct Raking method
The correct method is to use both hands on the rake and use a PUSHING motion away from you, this smooths out the footprints etc whilst leaving the sand in the right place. Below is a short video to demonstrate (there may be an advert that plays first)

If you think "That's just greenkeepers being fussy" - watch Ian Poulter raking his own bunker on a Practice day at The Open. Perfect technique which got a round of applause for his efforts!
