On Tuesday 21 February, Normanton Golf Club was buzzing with activity. We were not only hosting the Leeds and District Ladies Golf Association Winter Alliance, with 104 ladies scheduled to play, but also a series of HS2 information sessions when up to 500 visitors were expected to attend. I'm told that our Marketing Director, Richard Poynton, looked very fetching in his yellow fluorescent jacket as he controlled parking on our very busy car park!
I was honoured to be asked to present the prizes for the Ladies Winter Alliance. This prestigious competition is hosted in rotation by participating Yorkshire Clubs and as I said, attended by 104 players on this occasion. Gentlemen from the host Club are offered a courtesy game at one of the participating Clubs.
The Alliance format comprises alternate shots taken by a playing pair, playing off half of their combined handicaps. The first 10 pairs receive prizes and league table points for their Clubs. The winners on this occasion were first Howley Hall, second Mid Yorkshire and third Waterton Park. Unfortunately, our Normanton Ladies were so busy hosting the event and ensuring the comfort and well-being of our guests, they decided not to field any teams.
The weather was warm and bright and stayed fine for the competition. Thankfully the last teams were back in the Clubhouse before the rain started. An excellent day was had by all, with much praise for Normanton Golf Club as a wonderful host.
To cap off a very successful day, I was nicely surprised to be presented with a cheque of £250.00 as a donation to the club presented by Julie Ludwell, the honorary Secretary of the Association
Much appreciation should be expressed to the Ladies Section organisers and helpers, our Starters and Spotters, Pro Shop, Catering, Greens Staff and the EGGS, for their support and contribution to make this event such a great success.
